ಇಳಕಲ್ಲ ಪಟ್ಟಣದ ಪರಂಪರೆಯೇ ವಿಶಿಷ್ಟವಾದದ್ದು. ಐದು ದಶಕಗಳ ಹಿಂದೆ ನಾರು, ಕ್ಷಯ, ಕುಷ್ಠರೋಗ ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯವಾಗಿದ್ದವು. ಬೆಲ್ಲದ ಸಾದಾ ಚಹಾ, ಚೂರಮರಿ ಸೂಸಲ, ಮಿರ್ಚಿ, ಶಿಕಾರಿ ಚುಟ್ಟ ಇಲ್ಲಿಯ ಬಡ ನೇಕಾರನ ಜೀವನ ಶೈಲಿಯ ಸಂಕೇತಗಳಾಗಿದ್ದವು. ಎಲ್ಲರ ಮಾನ ಕಾಯಲು ಬಟ್ಟೆ ಉತ್ಪಾದಿಸುವ ನೇಕಾರನು ಒಂಟಿ ಧೋತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿರೇ ಹಳ್ಳದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ನಾನ ಮಾಡಿ, ಅದನ್ನೇ ಒಗೆದು, ಒಣಗಿಸಿ ಮತ್ತೆ ಉಟ್ಟು ಹಳ್ಳದ ದಂಡೆಗಿರುವ ಮಹಾಂತ ಗದ್ದುಗೆಗೆ ಕೈ ಮುಗಿದು, ಬೆನ್ನು ಸೇರಿದ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಗೆ ಅರೆ ಬರೆ ಉಂಡು, ತನ್ನ ನೇಕಾರಿಕೆ ವೃತ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ತೊಡಗುವ ಕಾಯಕ ಜೀವಿಯಾಗಿದ್ದ. ನೇಕಾರನ ಹೆಂಡತಿ ಬತ್ತಲೆ ಎಂಬಂತೆ, ‘ಧನಿ’ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಗೆ ನಲುಗಿ ನರಪೇತಲನಾಗಿದ್ದ. ಈ ಏಕತಾನ ಕಷ್ಟದ ಜೀವನದಲ್ಲಿಯೇ ಕಲೆ, ಸಂಗೀತ, ನಾಟಕಗಳತ್ತ ವಾಲಿದ ಪರಂಪರೆ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
